Course Description

NOTE: Tuition does not include textbooks or exam. Students are responsible for purchasing their own textbooks and registering for exams. ARCT-level Theory classes are only offered during the Summer Term. Regsitration opens in early spring.

DESCRIPTION

This accelerated Advanced Level course corresponds to the content of a 3rd year College or University music program, and is designed to prepare students to write the ARCT Analysis Examination. Students should be at least 14 years old as of the start of the course. Students must have completed Level 10 Harmony & Counterpoint before registering for this course. The completion of weekly homework assignments is required. Please see Course Outline below for more details. This class is only offered during the Summer Term.
 
Tuition includes:
  • 27 hours of online classes taught by a senior RCM Examiner via Zoom
  • Moodle Account to access instructor handouts and upload assignments

COURSE OUTLINE

This course investigates the compositional method of great composers through:
  • analysis of tonal and thematic-motivic structures
  • Baroque fugues
  • Classical sonata movements
  • 19th-century art songs
  • post-1900 techniques and procedures
