  • Why is the RCM offering this course?
    The RCM Teaching Online Course was created for you to enhance your skills and communicate as effectively as possible when teaching in a digital environment, and ultimately to engage your students in new ways and help them succeed when learning remotely.
  • What is the course experience like?
    This course is designed to be highly collaborative. You will be challenged to explore the content and interact with other participants in discussion forums and by sharing feedback on each other’s projects. Participation is part of your grade, so the more you engage, the more you will learn and be credited.
  • How long does the course take to complete?
    Course completion should take approximately 16-20 hours. We recommend that you spread this out over a few weeks so you can work through the content, contribute to the activities, and share your ideas during discussions. We suggest that you complete it within a maximum of two months from the time that you start to keep your exchanges with other participants timely.
  • What is the purpose of the course?
    The premise of this professional development is to expand your online teaching skills as you bring your music teaching experience to your students in an online format. This course is not designed to assess your music teaching abilities.
  • Who is this course for?
    This course is for any music teacher who is interested in improving their virtual teaching skills and increasing their engagement with students during remote lessons. There are no prerequisites to enroll.
  • Do I need to currently be teaching students to take this course?
    No, you don't need to be currently teaching students to take this course. The final project requires participants to write the equivalent of an online lesson plan or video record a lesson. However, those aspects can be accomplished without having participating students. 
  • What is the difference between the Teaching Online Course and the RCM-produced How to Teach Music Online Webinar Series?

    The RCM How to Teach Music Online webinar series provides an opportunity to hear from experienced educators on relevant topics in online music teaching whereas the Teaching Online Course is a structured course with hands-on activities, forums with teachers, quizzes, assignments, and a final project demonstrating your understanding of online music teaching. This course requires participant contributions and successful assessment for completion.

    Successful completion of the course will earn the participant an RCM Teaching Online Course that represents professional development in online teaching. The designation will appear next to your name in the RCM Teacher Directory.

  • What is the difference between being an RCM Certified Teacher and the Teaching Online Course?

    An RCM Certified Teacher is accredited based on a combination of credentials and demonstrated experience with the RCM system of music study and assessment. The accreditation is assessed and renewed every two years. Learn more about becoming an RCM Certified Teacher

    The Teaching Online Course is professional development specific to the skills and resources involved in effective teaching in an online setting.  

  • What is the difference between the Online Piano Teacher Course and the Teaching Online Course?

    The RCM Online Piano Teacher Courses are specific to professional development for teaching piano at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. The 10-week (approximately 60-hour), course is offered online so participants can learn on their own schedule. Course graduates will earn an RCM Online Piano Teacher Course certificate and those who have submitted at least two successful piano exam candidates at the required levels within two years of course completion, and who have achieved the RCM Level or equivalent that corresponds with that designation, are eligible to become an RCM Certified Teacher at no extra cost. 

    The Teaching Online Course is professional development specific to the skills and resources involved in effective teaching in an online setting. There are no prerequisites required to enroll in this course.  

  • How long do I have access to the course content?
    You will have access to the course content, activities, and forums for one year from your start date.
  • How much does the course cost?
    The course is $99.00.
  • How will I receive my certificate once I complete the course?
    Upon successful completion of the course, a digital certificate will be created for you to save, print, and share. To access your certificate, login to the course, and download the PDF. You will have access to the course content for one year from the time you enrolled, so be sure to download and save your certificate upon course completion.
